Wedding photographers should understand light

Awesome photographs are expected by your clients regardless of the lighting conditions. As a wedding photographer you must learn how to adapt to every possible lighting condition. Throughout the day you will have to deal with the bright midday sun, uneven shadows from trees, candle lit receptions and many more lighting variations in color temperatures. These different lighting conditions can change quickly too. Imagine shooting in a candle lit ceremony and then have to rush out and capture the guests leaving. Those are 2 distinct lighting conditions you will have to adapt for quickly. Otherwise, the color in your photographs will not be accurate.

I recommend shooting in manual mode for all your weddings. Adjust your cameras color (Kelvin) temperature based on the available lighting conditions. Shooting outdoors in the bright sun will require using a Kelvin temperature of around 5400 degrees. However, when your indoors (think of an old Catholic church) your Kelvin setting may be as low as 2400. Use flash indoors and you can set your Kelvin setting back to your outdoor temperature. Experiment with your camera to see what Kelvin temperature looks best in all lighting conditions. Write down your findings and memorize them for quick adjustments.
